Smells Like Teen Spirit

Smells Like Teen Spirit                                                                                                                                     by Nirvana

I like this song because it is fast and catchy, and the music brings the listener energy. One technique the song uses in its lyrics is assonance. Here is an example:

With the lights out, it’s less dangerous.                                                                                                                    Here we are now, entertain us.                                                                                                                                      I feel stupid and contagious.                                                                                                                                       Here we are now, entertain us.                                                                                                                                   A mulatto.                                                                                                                                                                           An albino.                                                                                                                                                                         A mosquito.                                                                                                                                                                       My libido.

I think this song is trying to say is that the kids of this generation are becoming mindless fools. “I feel stupid and contagious Here we are now, entertain us “ is a line that is describing this and how Kurt Cobain, the leader of Nirvana saw the young people of his time. I think that it was a political statement too. Kurt Cobain once said “My generation’s apathy. I’m disgusted with it. I’m disgusted with my own apathy too, for being spineless and not always standing up against racism, sexism, and all those other isms the counterculture has been whining about for years.”

In the video there were a group of kids who looked bored in the beginning, and then Kurt Cobain starting yelling in the song and they started going crazy, flipping around, madness. It is disturbing. They needed extreme stimulation to be present.

    Hey Munster!
I love this song soooo much and I’m so glad someone chose to write about it! Great job, your writing is very thorough and thoughtful. Where did you hear about this song? A lot of the people at school are into Justin Bieber and stuff like that, so what introduced you to real awesome music? 🙂
    Good job!

Hi Makai! This song sounds really interesting. I love how you gave different examples of what you thought it meant. What made you choose this song? Next time I would say that the video on your page isn’t the music video.
